Isle of Man and Ireland Youth Exchange Builds Skills, Confidence and Lasting Friendships
Young people from the Isle of Man Youth Service recently returned from a successful international youth exchange with Crosscare Youth Service in Ireland, having spent five days developing new skills, building confidence and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.
The Young Workforce Youth Exchange, which took place from 27 to 31 July 2026, brought together young people and youth workers from both organisations to take part in a range of learning experiences, cultural activities and outdoor challenges designed to promote personal growth and strengthen international partnerships.
Building More Than a Trip
Behind the scenes, the exchange was the result of six months of partnership working between the Isle of Man Youth Service and Crosscare Youth Service. Staff collaborated on recruitment, safeguarding, travel arrangements, accommodation, learning programmes and risk assessments to ensure a safe and rewarding experience for all involved.
The programme was developed with clear objectives: to build confidence and resilience, strengthen teamwork and leadership skills, promote cultural understanding and create meaningful opportunities for learning through youth work.
Learning Through Experience
Throughout the week, participants challenged themselves through practical activities that encouraged teamwork, communication and problem-solving. Young people learned about water safety, navigation and personal responsibility while supporting one another in new and unfamiliar situations. They also explored Irish culture through music and drumming workshops, visited significant cultural and historical landmarks, and gained experience of independent living and leadership responsibilities.
These experiences helped participants develop valuable skills that will support them in future education, employment and community involvement while broadening their understanding of different cultures and communities.
Young People's Voices
The impact of the exchange was clearly reflected in the feedback from young people.
One participant, Will, said:
"Learning the life-saving process for someone in difficulty in the water was something I will remember and could help me save a life in the future."
Others spoke about the friendships they had formed and the confidence they had gained through taking part:

Young people consistently reported increased confidence, greater independence and stronger friendships, with many continuing to stay in touch with the friends they made during the exchange.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The success of the 2026 exchange has strengthened the partnership between the Isle of Man Youth Service and Crosscare Youth Service and laid strong foundations for future collaboration. Plans are already underway to welcome young people from Ireland to the Isle of Man in 2027, providing another opportunity to build on the relationships, learning and experiences established during this year's programme.
